Mental note: I HATE YOUTH HOSTELS.

Particularly the bits where drunken people stagger in to the dorm room at midnight, crash about, make a lot of noise, turn on lights, and wake me up from a dead sleep. Then, at 6:00am, when I have to get up, I am too nice and polite to return the favour and so struggle along in the dark so as not to wake those same people up at the other end of the clock.

To add insult to injury, I stubbed my toe trying to get dressed in the dark this morning.

On the other hand, have had COFFEE and am once again sitting with a big pile of letters to Stead in front of me.

I am spending today and half of tomorrow here, then hopping a train back to London so I can go in to the school and start getting set up for Monday.

eta: This archive is the coldest place I have ever been. I am going to have to buy some survival gear -- heavy-weight sleeping bags and Inuit boots and things -- if I intend to make it through two days here.

you don't hate youth hostels, you hate drunken idiots. (the same way i hate the drunken hos that ruin the elgin street diner for me on friday nights, when i just want to sit there with a club sandwich and a magazine and not have to fend off the club crowd. RAGE.)

also, two words: thermal underpants.

Great, thanks, now I want an Elgin Street Diner club sandwich with the great, burning passion of a great, burning, passionate thing.

*craves uselessly an ocean away*

I suppose I would have hated the Youth Hostel experience of last night if I'd had someone else there with me. Like when you and I went hosteling in Toronto. That was alright. It was the safety in numbers -- with two of us getting up and ready early in the morning, we had the RIGHT to be mildly disruptive. We represented a significant percentage of the room's population.

I do hate drunken hos, though. It's true.

I have those wrist tubes with the thumbholes. They're in fashion over here. I bought a pair to wear today after seeing how cold the archive is yesterday.

i love how you're probably the only person in london with utilitarian thumbholey wrist tube thingies. how very dickensian!

when we do paris, no hostels for us. i find us a cheap-ass apartment to rent.

GOOD PLAN. Apartment. Yes. Am v. excited.

My inner Victorian feels very satisfied with the whole shivering-in-the-cold-suffering-for-my-art history thing.
