Goldfish are incredibly tough! We had some we bought to "condition" the water for pretty fish, and the goldfish just lived and lived. And lived. Even when the pump broke and we didn't change the water for a while, they lived. About nine years, until we adopted another one that had some kind of disease and it killed them all. Nine years! We were utterly surprised.
