I am so sorry I missed this comment when you originally made it. I was in such a daze when I got back from Cameroon!
Not to fear -- Cameroon was brilliant and well worth a visit if you ever make it there. On the one hand, it is very typical of a lot of parts of Africa and heartbreaking in its poverty. On the other hand, it is wonderful and culturally rich and amazing.
I am uniquely lucky in that my father has links in a small rural village and we spent much of the trip there. Cities, all over the world, are cities. They have big city problems in Duala that are just like the big city problems everywhere. But once you get out of the city, you get to actually meet people who are very interesting and see the proper culture of the place.
