my toaster broke last week. as you know, I feel as you do about toast: mostly: yum, and also: necessary. I have since been toasting bagels in the oven using the 'broil' setting. it's very quick, and works well enough while I wait for the new toaster I ordered using my credit card points. so even if there's no toaster, you can have toast!
